Sapota / Chikoo Shake

Yesterday was a very bleak day. I know not why. Somehow things I have been trying to work out just do not seem to fall in place. Its one of those days where if anything could go wrong , it did. One of those days where I would have just rolled up in the blanket and dozed the entire day. But that was not to be. So instead I settled for the next best thing in the house – a glass of cold chikoo / sapota shake.

Sapota commonly known as chiku is mainly cultivated in India for its fruit value, while in South-East Mexico, Guatemala and other countries it is commercially grown for the production of chickle which is a gum like substance obtained from latex and is mainly used for  preparation of chewing gum. The fruit has an exceptionally sweet, malty flavor.

Sapota / Chikoo is a rich source of digestible sugar , proteins, phosphorous, iron and calcium among many other minerals. The tree bear plants within three years of planting. It is mostly bought in small quantities at home. This fruit has a great latex content. It does not ripen on the tree and ripens only when picked. The fruit when ripe resembles a soft kiwi fruit. Add chikoo as per your taste. Feel free to add more than the above mentioned quantity as the flavor and sweetness depends on the quality and taste of the chikoo you use.
