Coconut Chammanthi

Coconuts are the crowning glory of Kerala, aptly called ” The land of coconuts”.  One can find these trees as far as the eye can see. Whether you have a small plot of land or are the master of acres of land, the coconut tree rules the roost..!! The coconut tree grows to a height of 25 m. The trunk has rings indicating each years growth and the top of the tree bears bunches of long leaves. Coconuts are a very essential part of Kerala cuisine.

A chammanthi is probably the most underrated of all foods. It is a most versatile preparation. It changes its hues and flavors, taking on the  taste of the condiments added with each addition giving it an unique distinction. I could go on about this simple dish because… I ADORE IT..!!  Thats right … I could have pot loads of rice if I had some chammanthi on the side… an obsession my family can’t understand. For me, it is the  humble dish that makes a simple meal into a something exceptional.  Hence be warned and not too surprised if you find varieties of the same on my blog.

Here’s the recipe:

  • Coconut           1/2 grated
  • Pearl onion      4-5
  • Green chilli       2
  • Ginger              small piece
  • Tamarind         small piece
  • Curryleaf         few
  • Salt                    as needed

Grind all the ingredients together in the grinder jar. Do not add water. Grind till everything is finely processed and crumbly. Check seasonings. Scoop up in a small ball and serve with hot steaming rice.
