Dahi Bread Vada – an imitation last minute dahi vada..!!

A take on the classic Dahi vada – made of bread and curd..a quick fix, last minute dahi bread vada.!!
It is a most peplexing situation when guests drop in at the last minute. No phone call, no warning…. there they are at your doorstep, a bright smile on his face and a howling 2 year old bundle of joy in her hand, and your husband no where to be seen as he is working late at office.. sounds familiar??

This is a godsend recipe, an evening snack that can be made in a jiffy. No hassles –  totally fussfree. All you need are basic ingredients lying around your house and you can have a tasty dahi vada at home.



  • Bread slices – 5
  • Curd – 1 cup
  • Ginger – small piece grated
  • Green chilli – 1 big deseeded
  • Chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seed powder – 1/2 to 1 tsp
  • Salt – as needed
  • Sugar – a pinch
  • Corriander leaves
  • Sev to garnish



  • Tamarind – lemon sized
  • Water – 1/2 cup
  • Sugar – 1/4 cup or as needed
  • Chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Pepper powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Black salt -1/4 tsp


To make sauce

  • Soak the tamrind in the hot water for half an hour. once softened microwave for 1 minute.
  • Pass through a fine seive. Seperate the pulp from the seeds and reserve the liquid.
  • Combine all the ingredients together and cook on a low flame till the sauce has slightly thickened.
  • Check for seasonings and add if any. Reserve the chutney

For dahi vada

  • Cut the crusts off the bread slices. Sprinkle with water till just soft but not soggy. Squeeze off the waterlike you would for bread rolls. Fry in oil till crisp on the outside. Keep aside
  • Combine the curd with the cumin powder, chilli powder, ginger, chilli, salt and sugar and whizz in a blender just once. It shud not be watery, but the ingredients should have just combined.
  • Pour a little curd on the serving plate. Add the bread slice on top. Add somemore curd and another slice of bread. Pour the curd mix till the breads are completely immersed in it. Drizzle some of the tamarind chutney on top. Garnish with corriander leaves and sev. Chill well and serve. You can also serve immediately if using cold curds.
